Current Areas of Emphasis

Health and Human Services

The Crail-Johnson Foundation supports programs which improve the quality of life for children and families. Funding is limited to programs which serve economically, socially and physically disadvantaged children.

Funding priority is currently given to initiating, continuing or expanding programs in the following areas:

School-Based or School-Linked Programs
Programs which promote the delivery of health and social services at the school site through coordinated efforts among schools, parents and service providers. School-based parent centers and parent education programs, which strengthen parental involvement in the education and health of their children, are given priority.

Child Abuse and Domestic Violence Prevention and Treatment
Comprehensive efforts directed toward the prevention and treatment of family violence including community and educational outreach, counseling and shelter services.

Child and Maternal Health
Health services, which include health assessments, health education, prenatal care, immunizations, nutrition and parent education are preferred.

Adolescent Health
Comprehensive efforts that provide health services, health education and the prevention of violence, pregnancy, substance abuse, STD/HIV infection and other risk behaviors among teens.

Education

The Crail-Johnson Foundation supports educational programs as a means to address the long-term well-being of children and community. It is through the support of education that CJF hopes to assist in providing children with the tools necessary to build a life of quality. CJF support is exclusively focused on programs that address the educational needs of economically, socially and physically disadvantaged children.

The foundation supports both proven classroom specific approaches and innovative programs aimed at systemic change. Funding priority is currently given to initiating, continuing or expanding programs in the following areas:

Early Childhood Development
Programs that address the health, academic and social needs of children preparing to enter kindergarten.

After-School Enrichment Programs
Tutoring, computer and educational programs which enhance self-esteem, promote the value of education and improve educational outcomes.

Math and Science Curriculum
Programs which serve to build skills in math and science at the elementary and middle school levels. Programs which increase awareness of science concepts and applications.

School to Career
High school based career-training programs which lead to actual demonstrated employment opportunities.

Literacy Programs
Programs that focus on bringing children to grade level in reading and literature.

College Preparatory Programs
Programs which prepare urban high school students to enter college, including academic counseling, entrance exam preparation and identifying financial resources.

Neighborhood and Community

CJF supports collaborative community efforts to improve the quality of life for children, youth and families in inner-city neighborhoods. Programs most likely to be funded are:

Comprehensive Neighborhood Redevelopment Projects
Collaborative projects which mobilize the community to improve itself.

Parent Empowerment and Involvement Programs
Integrative programs which focus on parent education, community involvement and leadership training.
